Community Clean-up Success
On Monday 3rd October we supported Gentoo with a clean-up on the Amberley and Harrogate Streets land. The site had become a dumping ground and local residents were fed up of the fly tipping, bonfires and dog mess. There were also large patches of overgrown weeds and shrubbery which were an eyesore for local people. Gentoo managed to secure some funding from Sunderland City Council's SIB fund to cover the costs of disposing of the rubbish and to pay staff costs for cutting back the weeds and grass.
Together with Back on the Map staff, local residents and volunteers from Sans Street Youth & Community Centre the site was cleared in one day with over a tonne of rubbish and fly tipping removed. Most of the waste removed was household rubbish and sadly appeared to have been dumped by local people. We hope now the land is clear people will think twice about fly tipping in future. Local children play on the site and we are very pleased it is now a safe place for them to do so.
We want to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to Gentoo as despite the land not being theirs listened to local people and did something about the problem. Their staff on the day did a fantastic job and their clean up team stayed late into the afternoon to pick up a final van load of waste. A special thanks also to the volunteers from Sans Street Youth and Community Centre and two local blokes Bill and Alan who came out to help. Well done everyone the site looks fantastic.
